Massimo Aiello Tribute To Beethoven Drum In The Symphony No. 9 Azzurra Music |
(Batteur Magazine n° 197: November, 2006) |
![]() |
Re-readings of classic music are
always been a dangerous challenge. The Italian drummer Massimo
Aiello decided to play a drum part over Beethoven’s Symphony n.9. The
richer symphony of the German composer is made of four movements, among which
there is the famous “Inno alla gioia”. Massimo Aiello did a big work of
writing to perform and accompany this opera of more than an hour. I have to say
that I do not completely agree at his way of working. Each movements of this
symphony are not necessarily suitable for a drum part; probably it would be
preferred to choose shorter works. It is not my taste to approach binary rock
rhythms than some jazz accompaniment. Probably it would be more interesting the
use of brushes or mallets to try new colors (Massimo
Aiello’s note: "brushes and mallets has been hardly used, does the reviewer
listen the CD?....
I think not....I’m sorry!").
I recognize the hard work needed to
realize a similar record, but the final result leaves me cold. Listen to get the
general idea of it.
